Once just a kid from Croydon, he's now published a series of middle-grade sci-fi books called Cosmic Cadets with Oxford Children's, illustrated by Rochelle Falconer. Following Gloria, the first human at the Cosmic Cadets Academy, and her furry-tailed partner Razz, it's a fast-paced, hilarious space-buddy adventure for readers aged 6 to 9, praised for taking on "important, gently handled issues of belonging, difference and friendship" amid the fun and chaos.

Ryan also wrote the picture book What Can We Be? with illustrator Kayla Coombs, and contributed three stories — Walter Tull, Lilian Bader and Claudia Jones — to Scholastic's anthology Bedtime Stories: Beautiful Black Tales from the Past.
